First Farm Table Finds A Home

After several prototypes, the first farm/work table has been delivered to a client. Built using all reclaimed materials, it’s modeled after the work tables we inherited with our building, the old Star Laundry. The old finishes are retained wherever possible and the tops, made from old siding or decking, one inch thick boards worn smooth and finished with wax, they have a great look and are practical, too!

The Farm Table

Our first table client is a wonderful local bakery, Back in the Day, on Bull Street in Savannah’s Victorian District. The owners, Griff and Cheryl Day were looking for a table to go with a ten foot long antique bench for the cafe area of the bakery (great sandwiches!) and admired the old work tables in our shop. So we built this ten foot long table that fits just right. Here are some more images of the table and it’s story.

Girls on the Run 5K

Southern Pine and Girls on the Run invite you to participate in the 5k Celebration Run at 8:30 a.m. on Sat. May 12 at SSU’s Wright Stadium. This important fundraiser for Girls on the Run is growing each year. This will be a unique, fun running event whether you’re an elite runner or a casual walker! It’s professionally timed for the serious runner and also includes a concurrent 5k for preteen girls finishing up the Girls on the Run youth development program. A great family oriented morning, with an After Party that’ll include entertainment, a Kids Zone, and more. The Adams Hall Project!!!!!

This is the historical Adams Hall at Savannah State University, which is one of the older buildings still at the school. We were assigned the honor of preserving the historical value and image of this outstanding structure! The rooms in Adams Hall are 40 X 100 and the vaulted ceilings are 25 feet. We restored the plaster, painted, reconstructed all the windows including the arch tops, replaced the missing eyebrows based on the originals, the cornices, north entry, and we are currently working on restructuring the iron pediments.

Very interesting article about how the workforce has changed so dramatically. Graduates are now more focused on corporate positions, which in turn is forcing skilled craftsmanship into an endangered art. Enjoy!!!!!!

Tour de Coop 2011 a Success!

On Sunday, November 20th, the Savannah Urban Garden Alliance (S.U.G.A.) held their 3rd Annual Tour de Coop. The tour began in Southern Pine’s courtyard, where we have recently built our own chicken coop.

Participants then boarded a trolley and toured several chicken coops in midtown neighborhoods. Afterwards, the trolley came back to Southern Pine for a reception, which included a raffle, silent auction and trivia. All proceeds raised from the event benefited S.U.G.A.’s educational outreach programs.

S.U.G.A.’s mission is to increase access to local food, while providing educational programs to the community that promote sustainable and affordable gardening practices. Through workshops on composting, rain gardens, bee keeping, chicken husbandry and more, S.U.G.A. teaches people in the community how to grow their own sustainable, healthy food. The organization believes that community gardens can help alleviate obesity and food shortages, while promoting nutrition. It is important to know where our food comes from and have a connection with that food.

Dilated Spectrum Adds Printing Press to Business

Dilated Spectrum now has an antique letter press and will have another one in a few weeks. They are both Chandler and Price (circa 1940s). The first press is capable of printing 12”x18”. The second printing press is a Craftsman, can print 13”x18” and has an adjustable block to vary the depth of the press. The company will use the press to make promotional posters, stationary, letterhead, business cards and more.

The vision of Dilated Spectrum is to expand artistic mediums through collaborations with other artists, clients and the community.
